about

In partnership with the Penn Home Infusion Therapy team at Penn Medicine, AHE is working to understand the feasibility and acceptability of receiving intravenous iron (IVFe) infusion treatments in the home for pregnant patients with severe iron deficiency anemia (IDA) in the third trimester. Currently, eligible pregnant patients must receive IVFe in an infusion center, even though IVFe infusions are commonly administered at home outside of pregnancy. Many barriers, such as transportation, parking, childcare, and appointment scheduling, have made accessing the infusion center difficult for pregnant patients.

In this pilot project, AHE is bringing relevant partners together, including the home infusion team, clinicians, insurers, and patients, to understand how best to implement infusion therapy at home for this population.

looking ahead

The AHE team plans to use the findings from this study to inform a larger RCT to test the clinical implications of providing IVFe infusions at home for pregnant patients. Findings from these studies could inform clinical practice across Philadelphia and the country.
